Tulsi was raised in a Hindu cult. Her American mother is of European ancestry and converted to Hinduism in 1973. Her father is of Samoan descent. She was born in American Samoa. As a young adult, Gabbard was involved with SUFA (Stand Up For America), which her father founded, and later with The Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values, an anti-gay political action committee. Both were anti-gay.
